University of Delaware
The Disaster Research Center (DRC) at the University of Delaware established a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program to engage ten undergraduate students in hands-on research training that will enhance their understanding of the social science aspects of disasters. Each summer, a nine week research training institute is held at the DRC-REU site to provide students with the necessary academic background, training, mentoring and research experiences to prepare them to become the next generation of social science disaster scholars. REU trainees work with leading scholars and researchers on state-of-the-art research projects that focus on issues such as: disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery, warnings and technology, environmental issues in disaster and disaster vulnerability and resilience. Students and staff participate in trips that promote education in the disaster field as well as some recreational activities including the Natural Hazards Conference in Boulder, CO, tours of an Emergency Operations Center and the World Trade Center and the Disaster Roundtable in Washington, DC. A stipend and all transportation and lodging expenses are included. Students traditionally underrepresented in graduate schools, (e.g., minority students, women, students from poorer regions of the country, students from institutions with limited graduate programs) are strongly encouraged to apply. Students should have declared a social science major (such as Psychology) and/or completed at least 12 credits in the social sciences. The program is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and the University of Delaware. The deadline to apply is February 12, 2010. Weidiko Summer Program
Each year the Wediko Summer Program offers paid internships and opportunities for personal and professional growth for graduate and undergraduate students of various aspirations and interests. The Summer Program itself is a 45 day, strengths-based program for children who struggle with social, emotional, learning, and behavioral difficulties. The program is designed to help children build their self-motivation, decision-making capacities, and academic and social skills in an outdoor, active setting. The staff are an integral part of the program success and receive training and support to be participants, not simply agents, of the process of change and growth that children are experiencing.
